Paula Maree Mahoney is an acclaimed Australian photographic artist who anchors her creation in themes of death, loss and collective mourning. She uses performative photography, portraiture and family collaborative shooting to interpret unspeakable grief, observing mortality from a down-to-earth perspective to face the limitations of life directly. Her creation crosses boundaries, integrating textile art and object installation, and keeps exploring memory, sorrow and mourning rituals to reveal how acceptance of impermanence builds human empathy and collective belonging.

She earned her doctorate at Monash University, with a thesis exploring photography as a medium to interpret death and mourning. In 2022, she won the first Wei Tang Commission Award issued by the Museum of Australian Photography. Her artistic strength has been widely recognized: she twice gained high commendation at the Olive Cotton Photographic Award and was shortlisted for top competitions including the Bowness Photography Prize. Her works have been displayed at mainstream Australian art venues such as MAPh and the 2024 Melbourne International Photography Festival. She has attended many domestic and overseas art residencies in New South Wales, Tasmania, the Mauritanian Sahara and Alice Springs, and her pieces are collected by public museums and private collectors in Australia, the UK and the US.

Alongside her artistic output, Mahoney works as a senior curator whose curatorial practice intersects art, community development and social equity. She curated the Urban Bonfire project at Collingwood Community Justice Centre and Richmond Learning Bank. She has led numerous cross-disciplinary arts collaborations across the City of Yarra, partnering with the Collingwood Arts Precinct, Belgium Avenue Community Services, Yarra Youth Services, Richmond Arts Coalition and the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing.
